Our Belief System

In order not to be dependent on declining flower populations, a hummingbird will migrate over 3000 kilometres twice a year. A male hummingbird, especially, values his independence.

At Meago, we don’t have to please or prove anything other than our clients to whom our single-minded focus is to add value. We have successfully resisted the temptation of marketing our own property fund to the public – this could be a distraction as well as put us into a conflict of interest situation. We are also owner-managed, which means we don’t have a Big Brother dictating to us.

A hummingbird’s brain is 4.2% of its body weight, the largest proportion in the bird kingdom. During 24 hours it will feed on more than 1000 flowers. It will remember every flower it has ever visited and know exactly how long it will take this flower to replenish its nectar.

At Meago, our smartness is not only about the impressive academic qualifications of our people. It’s that each also has street smarts and the ability to look beyond numbers into the real world of property and other major asset classes.

A hummingbird has an in-built Garmin to take it to different feeding regions, even in different continents. Once it’s discovered a new one, it will genetically transmit this information to its offspring.

At Meago, we have the ability to travel great distances and to look beyond numbers in search of that elusive holy grail – an undervalued asset.

A Matter Of Integrity

Because a baby hummingbird cannot fly and will remain in its nest for three weeks, its mother’s care is paramount. She will build the nest, while the male hummingbird will chase any other male out of its territory.

At Meago, we have an acute awareness that we are working with OPM – Other People’s Money. Not just the trustees of a pension fund, but the actual members of that fund. In other words, real people. We take responsibility for our performance and also exercise this responsibility in terms of lower fees.

Small and Focussed

The hummingbird is the tiniest bird in the world. Yet its metabolic rate is 100 times that of an elephant. Its sight and hearing are far better than a human’s.

At Meago, we are unashamedly small enough to keep our fees low, yet big enough to execute all of our clients’ mandates.

A hummingbird is the only bird in the world that can fly backwards and hover sideways or even upside down.

At Meago, because we can prove the value of active management on portfolio performance, we have a unique and different methodology that enables us to stay ahead of the index.
